E’ un omaggio al contrabbasso dell’eclettico musicista emiliano, da anni attivo in Toscana, una sorta di originale autoritratto, a metà tra ragione e istinto, rigore e digressione, in un fluire di emozioni che si irradiano da un repertorio in cui ogni autore è fonte di ispirazione per Scaglia. Contrabbassista di talento, maturo e intelligente, la sua anima esplorativa è lontana dai consueti cliché, ed è amalgamata con il desiderio di comunicare. Il suo live vuol trasmettere infatti un’energia sincera da donare a chi ascolta e vuole essere partecipe.

Is Gianmarco Scaglia main project. This event is a tribute to his eclectic double bass player, a sort of original self-portrait, in the middle of reason and instinct, severity and digression, in a flux of emotion in which the author are font of inspiration for this musician. Gianmarco is mature and intelligent artist, far from the same clichè, wishful to communicate. His live concert wants to communicate a sincere energy to people who want to listen.

Per anni i musicisti jazz hanno interpretato temi presi a prestito dal repertorio della musica popolare contemporanea. I brani celebri vengono chiamati “standard” e la pratica del “tema con variazione” di antica memoria, in buona sostanza si rivela intramontabile. In questo progetto, Fabrizio Mocata ha pensato di andare a ritroso nel tempo prendendo alcune famose “arie” d’Opera che, per lo meno in Italia, possono essere considerate “canzoni popolari contemporanee del XIX secolo” e questo a mio parere conferisce ai brani più valore intrinseco e una qualità che consente più profonde esplorazioni nel tempo, struttura ed elaborazione armonica. Le tracce del CD rappresentano due diverse ma connesse aree del jazz. Da una parte abbiamo l’autentica interpretazione delle “canzoni popolari contemporanee del XIX secolo” e dall’altro abbiamo i brani che derivano direttamente dall’incontro della creatività e dell’interplay dei musicisti.

Non è un caso che uno di questi si chiami “Meeting of the Minds” Se nel jazz la scelta del materiale musicale non necessariamente influenza la formazione del gruppo, questo gruppo stesso produce del materiale musicale, producendo la maggior parte di ciò che i musicisti scelgono di suonare. Fabrizio Mocata è responsabile della scelta dei brani ed ha contribuito all’incisione con sorprendente versatilità, radicato nella formazione classica unita a tutte le esperienze musicali che ha maturato in diversi stili e generi. Gianmarco Scaglia ha contribuito con il suo accompagnamento solido e mai troppo invadente e con forte senso melodico e armonico. Il grande virtuosismo batteristico, la creatività poliritmica e il sostengo sono i contributi del grande Paul Wertico, che già da tempo ha dimostrato di essere maestro di ogni situazione musicale. I tre musicisti insieme hanno collaborato con grande energia e con rilassamento e creatività alla produzione di una delle sessioni di registrazione più regolari e produttive che abbia mai seguito nei miei 21 anni di carriera come produttore. For years jazz musicians have been interpreting themes borrowed from the great popular music repertoire. The popular song of the day, because of its durability, has earned the appellation of “standard” and the “theme and variation” practice used in jazz might be an ancient one by now, but in good hands still proves its timelessness. In this project, Fabrizio Mocata might have thought to go further back in time by picking some well-known “opera arias” that, at least in Italy, could be considered the “popular songs of the day of the XIXth century” and that, in his opinion, had both intrinsic value and a quality that makes further explorations in tempo, form and harmony rewarding. The tracks in this Cd are representative of two different, but connected, areas of jazz. On one hand we have the tried and true interpretation of the “standard material of the XIXth century”. Then there are the songs that arise directly from the meeting of the musicians’ creativity and interplay.

It is no accident that one of these tunes has been named “Meeting of the Minds”. If in jazz the musical material doesn’t necessarily make the group, this group definitely makes the material, making the most out of what they choose to use. Fabrizio Mocata provided the tunes and contributed to the recording with his surprising versatility, rooted in classical training mixed with the numerous musical experiences he has undertaken in so many different musical grounds. Gianmarco Scaglia contributed with his solid and never over-stated bass work and with strong harmonic and melodic senses. Amazing drumming, poly-rhythmic creativity and support are the contributions brought by the great Paul Wertico, who has long since proven himself the master of any musical situation. The three musicians together contributed with great attitude and great, relaxed and creative performances to the making of one of the smoothest and most productive recording sessions I ever produced in the last 21 years of my career as a producer.
